Older Leaders Giving Way To Younger Leaders

Young leaders are often very aggressive, and are ready to be movers and shakers, often because they haven’t failed enough. Older leaders think the younger leaders “haven’t paid the price.” The older leaders think the young will run away once things get hard. How can young leaders gain a place at the table? The hope for the organization isn’t found just in old or young leaders; it needs to steady integration young as older leaders step out! Whether we like it or not organization, ministries and businesses reflect the age of the leaders. Youth alone is not the answer. “Elder thought” is also not the answer. It is a combination of the wisdom and experience of the older generation and integration of the “youthful yearn”. The danger is that the older and current leaders promote the same, and force a continued agenda. Younger leaders must learn old ways and then apply new ideas and plans. Younger leaders should be welcomed with these new ways and not be threatened. Allow for young and creative ideas to bubble up and to happen. Don’t put your organization in jeopardy. Very few mission organizations or businesses heed this warning. I can’t tell you how many are now scrambling to fix this problem. I see it every day; as I see missions in countries having to restart and rebuild, as people who were wonderful people, "past” leaders, pass onto their heavenly reward. This often leaves a vacancy to be filled. The leadership looks for ways to implement with new leaders that were not in fact, groomed to be leaders. In house succession is the strongest and easiest if properly done. We must learn to identify someone or someone’s to replace us as we move through process. By the way, if you're young today ... start now! Don’t wait till you have passed over the line into older side . Let’s as older leaders know when it is time to step aside and open the door to becoming mentors; pray the younger generation will continue with the underlying values, beliefs and the vision. 1. Think ahead. 2. Keep and open mind. 3. Always remember the vision. 4. Include younger in training and meetings of inner circle. 5. Involve. 6. Try them in roles.
