Great wisdom is in the counsel of others, but God never says "Oops, I gave you wrong advice!” God is an amazing friend that only gives good advice. His words are final and absolute. Great leaders will always surround themselves with counsel. The Bible makes it clear that there is wisdom in multiple counselors. Leaders today, maybe like never before, need mentors to help them to navigate through this storm-ridden world. Henry Ford said it best; “A best friend brings out the best in me.” The goal for leaders must be to surround themselves with those seeking to bring out the best in them. This does not mean "yes" men or women, but those willing to confront as well as those who will outright disagree at the appropriate time. The fact is, there is only one perfect and sovereign counselor. Whatever questions you have, God Almighty, all knowing and Everywhere has the answer. His answers are total and complete, perfect in every way. He knows and He will help you as His plan materializes. He never has to go backward and revise His plans; they are perfect from the start. Psalm 32:8 says, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you and watch over you.” As we reflect on Christmas and the birth of Jesus our Savior, we should recognize what the prophet Isaiah said as he prophesied the birth of Lord. He wrote ... "He shall be called Wonderful Counselor." Timothy also wrote, "(God) wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the Truth.” The book of John reiterates when Jesus says these encouraging words, “I have come that they (you) May have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10. Why then do we not turn to the only counsel that is perfect and totally righteous? For some, It is ignorance. For others it is pride and narcissistic arrogance. This is why it is so important to surround yourself with God fearing mentors and God honoring mentors. The best of the best is God Himself. While your relationship with your mentors is unique, some will challenge you. Others will take on the role of cheerleader, and still others as coach. Some will raise the hard questions and others will deal with pragmatism, which is often the reason leaders fall. For the leader, it is not always easy because you must be open to criticism and deal honestly with your mentor. The choice of mentor should be someone who takes a “whole-istic” approach and special care for the heart, soul and mind of the leader, as well as their passions. A mentor is concerned for the person, the profession and the spiritual well being of the leader. The leader can benefit from guidance and constructive criticism . May I encourage you to surround yourself with God fearing role models and that you look to God’s Word, the Bible, for the ultimate success truths and ways. Man tries to do it their own way and find that mans ways in no way trump God’s ways. The Bible is very clear and says, “Seek ye First the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and All other things will be added unto you.” There are no redos with Gods plan, but instead it is perfect. There are no "oops" in God’s way
