Looking! - Talent Search Talent scouts search for talent; why shouldn't we in the church and missions do the same? Every leader needs a great organization made up of the best. Those who are structured and very organized. Those who are the thinkers. Those who are fabulous with public relations. Leaders need to surround themselves with Charismatic visionaries, dreamers who are committed. In today's world, I would add one thing more. Today we need legal counsel to make sure things don't go arie. The need to protect by being in compliance is becoming an everyday requirement. There are laws and regulations and HR requirements that need to be followed and adhered to. The information Technology age is upon us, even if we might want it another way. The need to communicate becomes imperative. Learning to be effective with Facebook, Twitter and Youtube are a new wrinkle in the area of communications. The additional responsibility of boards in the non profit world is another area of the search for gifts and talents. I have said, "Policy is people. and people is policy." The direction, vision and beliefs determine much of what the board will be, and how effective it is going to be. It will be responsible for setting upfront expectations. It will be from the direction of a God fearing and God honoring board that the vision will continue to prosper. It is where subcommittees and updates take front stage. They will become ambassadors for the kingdom, as well as ambassadors for the ministry or cause. It is for this reason I encourage the boards to be working boards. The board meetings should be well organized. The meeting time should be established, but for the sake of all involved, start the meetings on time and end when you say it will end. Have a clear focus and an agenda driven meeting. Adhere to Robert's Rules of Order and move the meeting along in a judiciary way. I have served on a number of boards and can give you some of the dos and don'ts of these meetings. I have experienced the good, bad and the very ugly boards and meetings. The key to a successful board is creating a plan to move the vision mission of the organization forward. The board needs short term as well as long term plans, but bookend every meeting with a review of the vision and inspiration. Tips for a successful board meeting: 1. Prepare in advance A. Agenda and meeting with heads of sub committees ...make sure you pre-sell controversial items. 2. Chairman must know how to call for the question ..and move on down the agenda without a discussion not pertaining to the current point. "Move the meeting along" 3. Use Roberts Rules of Order to move the meeting ahead. 4. Know how to get information quickly and concisely. Learn how to deal with sub- committed. 5. Keep detailed minutes. 6. Make sure the financial reports are easily understood and well done. 7. See the board as a team - build a team spirit. A. Recognize and thank participants. 8. Review any actions that are pertinent and that need immediate action. 9. Start and end on time. 10. Stay positive but don't refuse to confront.
